New Delhi [India], May 16 (ANI): Coming down heavily on Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over the alleged assault on AAP Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal by the former’s personal assistant, the BJP’s Delhi chief Virendraa Sachdeva alleged that the supremo of the ruling party in the national capital supports ‘oppression of women’.
Speaking to ANI on Thursday, the BJP’s Delhi chief said, “Last night, Arvind Kejriwal, Sanjay Singh and Bibhav Kumar (the CM’s aide accused of assaulting Maliwal) were seen together at the Lucknow airport. The person accused of assaulting Swati Maliwal is roaming around with him. This goes to show that Kejriwal supports the oppression of women. The real, anti-women, face of the AAP now stands exposed.”
Amid the fierce political showdown with the AAP over the alleged assault on the former DCW chairperson, BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala claimed earlier on Thursday that CM Kejriwal was shielding his aide.
It was alleged that CM Kejriwal’s aide assaulted the former chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women at the former’s residence.
After initially reserving silence in the matter, the AAP owned up to the incident, with senior party leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh saying that the CM had taken due cognisance of the incident and strict action would follow.
However, sharing an image of AAP leaders at the Lucknow airport in which party boss Kejriwal, along with Sanjay Singh and Bibhav Kumar are seen, Poonawala posted from his official X handle on Thursday, “72 hours No FIR on Bibhav Kumar instead Kejriwal is protecting him! Roaming around with him..”
The BJP spokesperson claimed that the assault on Maliwal was done at the behest of Kejriwal and she was subjected to violence.
“It is clear: attack on Swati Maliwal was done at (the) behest of Kejriwal himself Sheesh Mahal is Apradh Mahal & just like Draupadi cheerharan–a woman Rajya Sabha MP was subjected to violence, assault,” Poonawala added.
The BJP spokesperson claimed that Maliwal is now being forced by her party to keep silent or change her story which is why she has not approached the police.
“Now she is being pressured to keep silent or change her story as is evident from statements of Naveen Jaihind & Nitin Tyagi of AAP hence she hasn’t approached the police yet True face of AAP – Anti women anarchist party,” Poonawala said.
Meanwhile, leading the BJP’s efforts to campaign in the far corners of the city and reach out to voters ahead of polling in the national capital on May 25, Sachdeva, on Thursday, headlined an event at Hathoda Ram Park to rally support Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his bid for a third, straight term in office.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the campaign event, Sachdeva said, “Our workers are going to the far corners of the city and urging people to demonstrate their electoral support for PM Modi. The people are with PM Modi and we will make sure that the BJP wins all seven Lok Sabha constituencies of Delhi.”
Earlier, on May 12, the BJP’s Delhi president and Union Minister General (retd) VK Singh flagged off a bike rally in support of PM Modi in the national capital.
The rally, organised by the Sikh community, was led by party leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa.
“The youth have taken out a bike rally to show support of the Sikh community for PM Narendra Modi (for Delhi Lok Sabha seats). He has made untiring efforts to strengthen our community, be it taking action against the 1984 riots accused, opening the Kartarpur Sahib corridor, marking Veer Bal Diwas to commemorate the sacrifice of the four sons of Guru Gobind Singh, or rescuing members of the Sikh community from war-torn Afghanistan,” Sirsa told ANI during the rally.
The BJP came up with several new names as its choices for Delhi’s Lok Sabha seats including Bansuri Swaraj, Kamaljeet Sehrawat, Praveen Khandelwal, Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, Harsh Malhotra, and Yogendra Chandolia.
However, the sitting BJP MP from North East Delhi, Manoj Tiwari, earned a fresh ticket to seek a fresh term from the constituency.
The BJP won all the seats in the national capital in the 2019 and 2014 Lok Sabha elections and are eyeing an encore this time.
The Aam Aadmi Party and the Congress are fighting the elections in alliance in the national capital, with the former contesting four seats and the latter three.
The counting of votes in Delhi and elsewhere across all phases is scheduled for June 4. (ANI)
