Guwahati (Assam) [India], August 16 (ANI): The Assam Police started the Body Mass Index (BMI) assessment for 2024 at Guwahati on Friday. In 2023, 1.6 per cent of police personnel were found in the obese category (BMI 30+).
Taking to X, Assam Director General of Police GP Singh said, “The Assam Police BMI assessment for 2024 started at Guwahati today. In 2023, after two phases of assessment, 1.6 per cent (1223 out of 76313) were in the obese category (BMI 30+).”

Singh further said that the process would be faster this year since only weight needs to be recorded this year.
“We hope this figure will reduce significantly in the 2024 assessment. The process would be faster this year since the heights of most personnel are pre-recorded from last year’s data and only weight needs to be recorded this year. My BMI which was 25.12 in 2023 has been recorded at 25.02 today,” he added.
In 2023, the recording of BMI was carried out at 35 locations in the state for all serving police personnel from August 16.
On the direction of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam Police Headquarters has decided to go in for professional recording of the body mass index (BMI) of all Assam police personnel, including IPS/APS officers and all DEF/Bn/Organisations.
Earlier, the Assam DGP said, “All those who are in the obese (BMI 30+) category would be offered another three months of time to reduce weight (till November ends) and after that, they would be sent for voluntary retirement, the exception will be made for those suffering from genuine medical conditions like thyroid, etc.” (ANI)
