Guwahati (Assam) [India], April 26 (ANI): The Assam government has begun a crackdown on individuals posting controversial content on their social media accounts amid heightened tensions and security concerns in the wake of the Pahalgam terrorist attack.
The office of Assam’s Chief Minister on Saturday said that 10 individuals have been identified and arrested by the police for allegedly attempting to “justify” the Pahalgam terror attack, where 26 people were brutally killed. The state government has urged people to immediately report any such incident to local authorities.
“Strict action is underway against those attempting to justify or whitewash the Pahalgam Terrorist Attack. So far, 10 individuals have been identified and arrested. Everyone is urged to remain vigilant and immediately report any such incidents to local authorities without delay,” the Assam CMO posted on X.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday informed about the arrests of individuals carried out by the police for allegedly extending support to Pakistan amid heightened tensions in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, where 26 people were brutally killed.
He said that the Cachar Police have arrested two individuals for posting content that supports Pakistan. The two arrested individuals have been identified as Baktar Hussain Barbhuiya, resident of Ramnagar under Sonai police station, and Md. Imran Hussain Borbhuiya, resident of Malugram Ganiwala under Silchar police station.
“Cachar Police has arrested two more individuals for posting content supporting Pakistan on social media: Baktar Hussain Barbhuiya, resident of Ramnagar under Sonai Police Station. Md. Imran Hussain Borbhuiya, resident of Malugram Ganiwala under Silchar Police Station,” Sarma posted on X.
Sarma said that Md Mustak Ahmed was also arrested for posting “Pakistan Zindabad” on Facebook. His arrest took place late on Friday night, and the accused is a resident of Saykut village under the jurisdiction of Karimganj police station.
Earlier in the day, he lashed out at those making “anti-national” posts on social media while apprising of the arrest of a young man from Hajo town in the Kamrup district of the state.
He said that the government was monitoring the posts on social media websites and intends to take action against “anti-national” posts. Sarma warned that those posting content supporting Pakistan “directly or indirectly” would be booked under the National Security Act (NSA).
“A youth has also been arrested from Hajo this morning. We are investigating the posts, and we will take action against those posts which are anti-national. Whoever supports Pakistan directly or indirectly, we will apply NSA against them. We will take strict action,” Sarma told reporters here.
The country remains in mourning over the shocking death of 26 people in the terrorist attack in the Pahalgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, which also left many injured.
Twenty-six people were killed in the terror attack in Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on Tuesday.
India has taken strong countermeasures against Pakistan for its support of cross-border terrorism.
The government has temporarily suspended the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan. This decision was made at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) held on April 23, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and attended by Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. (ANI)
